I've been a Quicken user (with MoneyCounts before them) since 1990 or
so. I can say, without a doubt, that Quicken 2009 is the worst-
quality program that they have ever put out of the eight versions or
so I've used. I totally resent that Intuit forced me to "upgrade" to
this garbage from Quicken 2006.
Over the past four months, the program just totally freezes up every
two weeks or so. No response whatsoever. The only thing that can be
done is to kill it with Task Manager.
Then yesterday, the program came up with twenty new, duplicate
"scheduled transactions" that were actually a restaurant purchase that
I made weeks ago. Nothing to do with scheduled transactions. Can't
delete them. When I validate (or super-validate) the file, it says it
7 to 24 bad scheduled transactions, but when I restart the program,
there are still bad scheduled transactions.
Is there any good alternative out there with reasonably-similar
functionality, including online bill paying?

I disagree with your conclusion. At least, I have had only minor
problems with my version, Q2008 US DL. I think/hope that your problems
are due to minor data corruption, brought to the fore by the conversion
to the newer (Q2009) data format - the idiots at Intuits marketing insist
that the data format gets changed every so often so that there is no
backwards compatibility.
IMNSHO the best soltion for you would be to copy all data to a new file
name (from within Quicken). I think this removes lost space from edited
transactions etc, and makes the file set better manageable for Quicken.
Try it, what would you lose?

I will have to disagree with your statements re Q2009.
I also have been using Q since 1990. I routinely run a file
with partial data from 1990 and full data for all years 1990
to present.
I also "upgraded" from Q2006 to Q2009 some 4 months ago. I
have seen none of the problems you describe. Q2009 has run
flawlessly on the computer under WinXP SP3.
That is not to say if I had my druthers I would choose Q09
over Q06. Many features I would prefer the way they were on
Q06. I have seen few, if any, new features in Q09 that I
use. But, as I said, as a program, Q2009 has performed
flawlessly.

That's not my view at all. Like each new version of Quicken, 2009 has
very few improvements over the previous one, but it is certainly not
worse.

I've been running Quicken 2009 almost every day since it was released.
I have *never* had that experience.

I have never had that experience either.
I can't tell you what has caused your problems, but it's something
specific to your situation. Don't blame it on Quicken.

Completely agree.

Mine won't freeze, but once it's decided it won't download
transactions any more, you're right.... Task Manager is the
only way to go.

I really wish there was, because I'd switch in a
heartbeat.
