QQQ Name change Jeff Harris 10-06-2008

Back on April 12, 2007 QQQ changed its symbol to QQQQ. Back then I
believe I did a 'Corporate Name Change'. The result was that Quicken
sold my shares of QQQ and bought the same shares of QQQQ.

Doing this seems have have screwed up my cost basis for QQQQ giving it
a cost basis of $0. I've ignored it up to this point but finally want
to fix it. Is there anything I can do?

As Han suggested, I think you should have just changed the
ticker symbol in Quicken, and said "yes" when Quicken offerred
to copy the prices for the old symbol over to the new symbol.

I don't think any version of Quicken has ever implemented a
Corporate Name Change with Buy/Sell transactions. I think a
Quicken Corporate Name Change does the same thing you'd do if
you opened the Security List and changed the name of the
Security ... except Quicken's Corporate Name Change also adds a
Reminder transaction in your investment account register for the
date you did the name change.

If you had said Quicken generated Shares Removed and Shares
Added transactions, I would have guessed you did a Corporate
Acquisition, which you might be able to recover from by deleting
those transactions. There would be one Shares Removed in each
account where you held the security, plus one Shares Added for
each lot held in each account.

[If the Shares Added transactions have $0.00 for Total Cost,
that would cause your Cost Basis to be $0.00.]
