Quicken 08: Vista SideBar Gadget...? Chester 08-29-2007

After installing the new version of Quicken, I now have the Quicken-gadget
on my sidebar. It doesn't show anything though, it's there -- but doesn't
appear to be 'connected' to my Quicken file. Everything shows as '0', and
clicking on 'Go to Billminder' does nothing. There don't seem to be any
options to set for it, right-clicking doesn't show a settings function.

Anyone have it working?

I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to, but I got it from Intuit's
support site and it looks reasonable:

"Vista Quicken Gadget does not display future transactions
Answer

When the Quicken Gadget is first installed on Microsoft Windows Vista, it
does not display upcoming transactions, even when a backed up Quicken file
with those transactions is used.

To see upcoming transactions on a newly installed Quicken Gadget:

1. Close Quicken.
2. Open the Quicken Gadget. Note: Quicken must be closed, and then
reopened.
3. In the upper right of the Gadget, click the Refresh icon.

Upcoming transactions now appear."

Thanks... Sounded good, but had no effect. I also tried removing the
file-password from Quicken, thinking maybe that was preventing the 2 from
hooking-up, but no luck... Not a big deal, would like to use it if it works
which at some point, I'm sure it will...

I downloaded and installed Quicken 2008 Deluxe on Vista Ultimate (32-bit)
and my sidebar gadget seems to be working fine. Where are your data files
located (mine are under a folder I created in the Documents folder)? Maybe
there are permission problems.

I'm not too sure that the gadget is really worth anything, though. On the
"List" tab, all it seems to do is say a certain number of transactions are
coming up, overdue, ready to print or send. The "Calendar" tab is worthless
since I already have the default (better looking) Vista calendar gadget
running and all the Quicken version does is add some color for days when
things are happening. You have to click the "Go to Billminder" button on
the bottom of the gadget to see what's actually happening. I'll give it a
while and see if it grows on me. But, right now, I'd say I'll be turning it
off in the near future.

Well, I think I see a benefit to the sidebar gadget. Billminder only pops
up when you boot the machine (or log in). It looks like the gadget updates
itself periodically. So, if you're one of the people who leave their
machines running all the time, you can see that something's changed and
either run Billminder or Quicken, itself, to do what needs doing.
