I should have added that the kb article number is found to the
right of the article itself, and Intuit calls it "Answer ID".

YES I have gone to the official site many times.

I am not computer illiterate either, having worked at IBM for 27 years and
having helped many others with computer problems.

I have followed their instructions exactly.

I have downloaded their recommended files to make a clean install. I have
downloaded the file from Microsoft. I have executed these files carefully.

I have gone to SEARCH and looked for Quicken and Intuit. Nothing there.

I have created a new User account and tried to install there. Still error
1638.

Quicken has the absolutely worst Install program of any application I have
ever worked with, even back to the DOS days.

What else can you now suggest?

Reinstall from an administrator account?

I may be wrong, but I think Q2007 may have been the first version that the
geniuses (genii?) of Intuit made so it was really possible to install from
a limited account.

Do you think I could install a 2007 version without all these problems? I
have not opened it yet because I had the 2006 CD and had it installed on the
same computer before. I just needed to format everything, started to slowly
install applications etc etc.

BUT - if you believe that 2007 WILL install in a new user account, I shall
try that.

BUT - the Quicken technical support (not too good either) said 2007 would
encounter the same problems. I could do another TOTAL reformat and then it
should install fine. Wonderful advice, right?

What if we had to do that with every application, we would after years still
be at the first application.

But I am awaiting you and other replies anxiously. Thanks for all who try to
help.

I did buy a 2007 version, just in case someone is really sure, that would
work. I have not openend

The above is what I just said: "I may be wrong". Don't /know/ the truth
<grin>. I run Q2006 Premier (although I feel deluxe may have been enough).
I still use XP, probably will until there is a real need for Vista.
I didn't see the use of upgrading to 2007 this year, and will wait for the
reviews of 2008 before buying that. I expect the first public mention of
2008's virtues and drawbacks in August or September.

Q2006 should install in an administrator account. You might have to switch
back and forth.
