7-zip can compress using its own 7z format, but it can also compress
using normal zip format (which any zip program can open). I've never
known anyone to have trouble with zip files I created using 7-zip.
7-zip can read various other compression formats as well (rar, tar, and
a bunch more). Rob L

And just to throw another one in there, I've used ZipGenius6 on accassion.
It is free and seems to be compatible with WinZip.
