Quicken 2008 on laptops? Mike Blake-Knox 10-14-2007

I've been using Quicken on a laptop for years.

Until a few years ago, Quicken could be active when the laptop was
suspended (or put into hibernate). Intuit then improved Quicken by
displaying a message to the effect that it didn't support being
suspended and then blocking Windows from suspending.

I'm currently using Quicken 2007 which usually allows Windows to
suspend but usually takes minutes to display the window contents that
were displayed before the suspend. Sometimes (e.g., while a transaction
was being entered) it still blocks suspend. I've also noticed that if
the laptop is suspended/resumed several times with Quicken running,
Quicken will flash the window contents on and off several times before
resuming normal operation.

Does anyone know if Quicken 2008 behaves better than Quicken 2007 when
Windows power management drops into and out of low power modes like
suspend or hibernate?

Thanks

Mike

You shouldn't be suspending your system with files open. There's a small but
definate risk of file corruption happening, since the PC is still relying on
RAM to remember what's happening. It's not a "might" happen, but an
"eventually WILL" happen kind of thing.

Hibernation should be acceptable, though, since it would take a major
catastrophy to corrupt the saved state while the laptop is off.

Unfortunately, we live in a world of compromises. I don't need to explicity
invoke suspend or hibernate as power management does it if I'm not actively
using the laptop. Preventing suspend probably increases the odds of being
unable to complete a transaction as the laptop will eventually run out of
battery and hence loose RAM contents.

Anyway, has anyone noticed any change in behaviour with Quicken 2008?

Thanks

Mike

Very good advice.

My laptop stays in this state for 15 minutes when the lid is closed, then
it goes into "suspend to disk" or hibernate mode.
