Quicken Deluxe 2004 & Vista? DotCom 10-08-2006

Hi, DotCom.

My Drive E: is simply an ordinary volume that is "neutral" (my term). That
is, there is no Windows, Vista or any other operating system installed on
E:.

I've dual-booted for years and I've been beta-testing successive builds of
Vista over the past year. My hardware changes often; currently I'm running
3 SATA HDs. Each is partitioned with a single small primary partition
followed by an extended partition covering the rest of the physical disk.
Each extended partition is divided into several logical drives. Each
primary partition and each logical drive is a "volume" and each is assigned
a "drive" letter. (As I'm sure you know, "drive letter" is a misnomer
because letters are not assigned to physical drives or even to partitions,
but to volumes, which can include USB flash drives, digital cameras, CD/DVD
media, etc., as well. As a one-man one-computer kind of guy, I know nothing
of networks, but I understand they also consume "drive" letters.)

Each operating system (both x86 and x64 versions of WinXP and each Vista
build) gets installed into a separate volume I create for the purpose. My
drive letters were assigned rationally at first - a decade ago - but have
become increasingly random as my system has "just growed" over the years.
Currently, I'm running Vista x86 (32-bit) build 5744, designated RC2, the
final build before RTM (Release to Manufacturing - the "Gold" version); it's
in Drive U:, a logical drive on my first HD. The previous build 5728 is in
T:, on my second HD. WinXP x86 is in F: and WinXP x64 is in L:. But they
all run Quicken from E:QuickenW. At first, C: and D: were my boot drives
and E: was for Data. Drive E: has grown to 70 GB and it still holds most of
my downloaded files, plus Program Files and lots of other stuff - including
the QuickenW folder.

Since my previous message, I've installed Vista build 5744 into U:Windows
and installed Q2007 Basic from there - into E:QuickenW again. ;<)

Hi R. C.

Have you had many problems with x64 (compatibility, drivers, etc.)? There
were a few posts regarding printing issues with Q in x64...

I'm not R.C., but I've been running x64 on a computer since around January.
When I bought my Canon printer I made sure that it would have x64 drivers. I
had to download them from the Canon site.
Don't have many other peripherals.
I just bought an external hard drive and x64 recognized it right from the
start. My Nikon digital camera downloads pictures without a problem.
I have a wireless adapter on this computer to connect to a home network.
Dealing with the drivers for that was a bit hairy, but it works.
However, I wouldn't want to have to try to install those drivers again
because I don't remember what I did.

A good place to look for drivers and advice on this subject is
http://www.planetamd64.com/ . And despite the name of the site, you don't
have to have an AMD processor to benefit from it. The owner of a 64-bit
Intel processor can learn just as much from the site.

Hi, Rick.

We haven't seen as much of you since Katrina. I'm glad to see that you
survived and are back!

Yes, there have been compatibility problems with 64-bit Windows and Vista.
:>(

But none of those have affected Quicken - in MY experience. ;<)

Of course, we all use Quicken differently. I seldom print anything from
Quicken. Nobody but me sees any of my Quicken output, so I just read it
onscreen. I have only one computer and no network. You may see problems in
YOUR use of Quicken that don't bother me at all.

My only printer is an HP OfficeJet G55 All-In-One, which I bought in 2000 -
then had to wait TWO YEARS for HP to produce full-featured drivers for
Windows 2000. WinXP had functional drivers built in, and so does Vista,
both 32-bit and 64-bit. Note that there is a difference between DRIVERS,
which let the hardware function with the operating system to print and scan,
versus the fancy applications PROGRAMS that HP produces to do fancy
brochures and such to show off all the many features of their hardware.
Most of the extra functions (OCR, etc.) in those apps are also available in
other apps, such as MS Office, anyhow. And, of course, the copier functions
of my G55 work without even being hooked to the computer.

IHV's (Independent Hardware Vendors) have been caught in the "chicken/egg"
and "moving target" binds. Why spend money to produce 64-bit drivers before
the market is ready to buy them? And why develop a driver to fit Vista beta
build 5112 when build 5600 may be different - and the final Vista may be
more different?

Currently, I'm still suffering compatibility problems with Vista, but they
involve applications like Nero and Adobe Photoshop Elements, not Quicken,
which has given me no significant compatibility problems with either WinXP
x64 or either version of Vista. As I said, the Q2007 Basic install was the
quickest and easiest yet, into the 32-bit versions of both WinXP and Vista
and into the 64-bit version of Vista.

Thanks for the comments, R. C. and DP.

And R. C., I don't get to "play" here as much these days since I'm still
deep into Katrina insurance claims, attorneys and, lately, my income tax
return preparation (which is due much later for Katrina victims). But I
lurk every few weeks and enjoy keeping up with the group.
