Quicken 2008 Premier

I recently received an LL Bean credit card - it provides free
shipping. I set up the account in Quicken with the new account wizard
so I would think the login and other information in Quicken is OK. But
I have not been successful are OneStep Updates on this account. For
two days in a row, I get the following message in the One Step Update
Summary.

Barclays Bank Delaware
Quicken was unable to update your accounts due to an error on the
Quicken server. The Quicken team has been notified of this error and
is working to resolve it. Try again later or update your accounts
from Barclays Bank Delware Web site. Your financial institution
cannot resolve this issue.

Is this something that is apt go away? I have other credit card
processed by Citi and have never seen this before.

This sounds a lot like the message you get when an Express Web Connect
download fails (often error code OL-501). I see that Barclays provides
only Web Connect downloads, so if you were downloading from them using One
Step Update, I think you must have been doing an Express Web Connect
download.

I think the error results from the inability of Quicken to provide the
correct response to a Multi-factor Authentication request by the financial
institution.

I believe there is a mechanism in place designed to handle "most" (but not
all) such requests ... but I believe it also requires some work (and quite
possibly, some ongoing work) on the part of the financial institution to
provide certain information to Intuit/Quicken. Quicken needs information
from the financial institution to allow Quicken to answer security
questions on your behalf; if Quicken doesn't have the instructions, or the
instructions are not correct, or do not contain current valid responses
... Quicken won't be given acess to the fi's web site to do the download.
[Quicken is trying to log on to the fi's web site as if it were you
logging on.]

If you're not getting acceptable results using Express Web Connect from
your financial institution (I have 2 EWC fi's and they work virtually 100%
of the time), your only recourse is to use plain Web Connect.

[I think it's possible that over time, Intuit will be able to fix some of
these EWC problems, with the help of the financial institutions. I also
think that some other EWC problems may never get fixed.]

John I appreciate the background, but I am still left with a pile of
ignorance -

First off, yes I do get the OL-501-CC error codes.

I have no idea if I am trying to use Express Web Connect or not - Are
you suggesting that by using (or not using) EWC I might get different
results?

I also have a Credit Card that is processed by FIA Bank Card Services
which I understand to be the former MBNA - anyway both are in
Delaware. That credit card will not and never has even when it was
MBNA download into Quicken daily transactions.. After the statement
period closes, it is possible to download the transactions on the
statement. I have learned how to deal with this. If the LL Bean card
at Barclays is the same deal I understand - but the error messages
don't tell me.

Lastly, if this EWC is different than the FIA bank card deal that is
OK also -- just would like to know if this is something that has a 1%
chance of getting fixed in the next year or if it is something that
might get fixed in a period of weeks.

Thank you sharing your experience and knowledge with people like
myself.

To see if an account is using Express Web Connect for downloading, go to
the Overview tab of the account and click the "Change Online Services"
button. If the account is using EWC, it will say, "This account is
cnnected via Express Web Connect" in the "One Step Update" section of the
dialog.

If you having problems with an fi that is now setup for EWC; you should be
able to significantly improve your download success rate by using plain
Web Connect with that fi. If you do a One Step Update and an account
setup for EWC has a problem downloading (and you don't want to wait to see
if it will succeed the next time you do a One Step Update; logon to the
account manually and intitiate the download yourself.

[I do not believe fi's that only download transactions that have appeared
on statements will generate error messages for that reason during a One
Step Update - and certainly not a 501 error. If you're getting the 501
error, I believe it means Quicken is unable to satisfy the security
requirements to log on to the fi's web site ... which probably means the
fi has not supplied correct logon security info to Intuit.]

I can't tell you whether or when EWC will improve for any particular fi or
even in general; I think it will need work from both Intuit and the
financial institutions ... and I suspect the fi's are not all that anxious
to spend much time or money on it.

FIA Bank Card Services is Bank of America by another name. Most BofA
cards only download on a monthly basis. You can get Direct Downloads
(if you have a Checking Account and pay a fee). If I remember, my
BofA downloads pretty much errors out in One Step Update if I had
Express Web Connect enabled. I basically watch for the email that my
statement was ready and then downloaded my trasactions.
