Quicken wants to uninstall Jim T. 05-18-2006

 Using QP2006.
When I tell it to backup the file it, for some reason, invokes an
uninstall! I can kill that, and the backup continues OK, but the next
time I close it asks about backing up again, as if it doesn't
remember.
I encountered this recently when a qfx file was downloaded - it tried
to uninstall when the file was invoked by Windows. I finally
discovered that it had something to do with it being the default for
Web Connect files. I had to restore from backup once when it damaged
some files.
Short of a complete reinstall, is there something I can do to fix
this?

How do you know it is uninstalling? It may be doing a repair install. In
that case, let it continue. When it is finished the backup will work
properly. This has happened to me.

Could be. The Quicken recommendation was to uninstall and reinstall in
ANOTHER directory. Of course I hate that kind of response, but after
restoring from a backup that continued to fail, I did that. It was
faster than I expected, and worked OK.
Quicken also said this could result from not having administrator
powers, but that wasn't true.

Trouble is that if you're running in a limited acct, you *CANT* do a
'repair' [or any other kind of] install [indeed, that's a big part of the
_point_ of running in a limited acct]. So you're a bit screwed. I even
tried making my limited acct temporarily admin, running quicken, letting it
do its thing, but when I made it limited it started doing the 'reinstall"
crap again.

I did find a sort of workaround: apparently, the program that's causing the
trouble is olbackup.exe -- if you replace it with something innocuous
[e.g., I have a thing called "test.exe" that I guess is from cygwin that a
friend emailed to me] then this problem will go away.
