There is absolutely NO need to actually PAY anything for UseNet. Lots of
FREE providers other than the god-awful Google.

One good free one is Motzarella.org.

Hi, ps56k.

My ISP (Grande Communications, a regional cable/TV/Internet supplier based
here in San Marcos) still include Usenet in my monthly subscription. This
Quicken group is the only active NG that I subscribe to of the 100,000 or so
available.

If I needed to find a free news server, I'd start by Googling (or Binging
with Microsoft's new Bing search engine) for "free news servers". Google
gets 149 million hits, Bing 177 million. Of course, "hits" are not
"recommendations". So I also would be asking in places like this newsgroup
for other users' experiences.

I also subscribe to a couple dozen public and private NGs on the Microsoft
news servers. Most of the 2000 or so public NGs are mirrored on many other
news servers and "forums". But there is no need to pay for the Microsoft
NGs. Just click here:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

That one click will start your default newsreader (Outlook Express or
Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail - or a third-party news client); create a
News Account for you on the MSFT server, which is free and does not require
you to log on; connect you to the Vista.general NG; download the 300 newest
posts there; and display the latest post in the Reading Pane for you.
Later, you can subscribe to any of the 2,000 NGs available, and you can
customize the newsreader to fit the way YOU read newsgroups. Sorry, no
Quicken NG on the MS server. :^{
