Hi guys!

I'm using a really old version of Quicken to track my personal finances. The
"help/about" screen says: Quicken Version 6 for Windows. Designed for
Windows 95 Release 6.0 Copyright 1995-1996 Intuit Inc. It is running on a
computer which is not connected to my network with 98SE as the OS. It uses
the following file extensions when it creates backups of my data: *.dir,
*.NPC, *.QDB, *.QEL, *.QMD, and *.QSD. I really would like to get into the
21st century. Can anyone recommend a newer version of Quicken that will
still recognize or convert these file extensions so that I can recover my
existing information and not start from scratch? I'm using Quickbooks Online
for my business and I love that product. Anything similar to that for my
peronal finances? Thanks much!!

I'm currently using Q2005 and will be switching to Q2008
shortly. I don't have any major problems with either version.
But given how old your product is, don't be surprised by the
changes you'll see.

If the newer version of Quicken can't convert the older version,
you can get intermediate versions of Quicken to complete the
conversion (free of charge).

Intuit technical support for conversion problems is also free.

Just a couple of months ago, I realized I had old, unconverted Quicken data
files from ages ago kept as archives (back to 1998). I worried that at some
point I wouldn't be able to open them with a new version of Quicken. So, I
went back and opened all of them with Quicken 2008. Quicken had no problem
opening and converting them to the latest version. If I remember correctly,
some of the older files went through a couple of stages during the
conversion process (an older converter which automatically fed into the
newer one). My guess is that you'll be fine with whatever version you use.

Thanks, guys. I bought Q08 and it will not open the older files I have. I
decided to just start over and when I get to the step where I connect to my
bank to download information it prompts me to change my password. When I try
to do this the software only allows me to enter 4 characters/letters and my
bank needs a password between 7 and 32 characters letters. I can't do
anything beyond this point. Any ideas?

The rules for editing passwords are supplied by your financial
institution to Intiuit, which makes them available to Quicken.
When a financial institution is new, or their password rules
have recently changed, there is often a delay getting the info
to Intuit and on to Quicken. [There's nothing much you can do
about this but wait, though on occasion Intuit has agreed to
look into the matter for a specific financial institution.]

Be certain you are using the correct Financial Institution name;
some fi's have names that sound like other fi's, and some fi's
have more than one name for Quicken use depending on the account
type.

If the fi has been downloading for some time and their password
rules are old enough, then it's possible you just don't have the
current rules on your pc (they should get updated via One Step
Updates).

You should make sure you have the most current release of
Quicken installed (R6 for Q2008, I believe).

Try doing a One Step Update with nothing selected for
downloading.

You should also consider calling your financial institution and
speaking with their Quicken tech-support department to see if
they have know anything about the problem.
