Recovering from a total reformat - Q 2004 Question Mark W 11-07-2006

Hi all
I just had to restore my hard drive (Win XP) from a total crash. I
restored from backup and all seems ok BUT I now have no sound in
Quicken. The sound files are there (in a folder under c:program
filesquickenw but they will not play.
In the Control Panel>Sound area there are no Quicken sounds listed. I
tried adding Playsound=1 to the quicken.ini but that didn't change
anything. I have the box checked under Quicken setup.

Can anyone advise what I need to do? I have searched archives but do
not see this problem. All I have seen is how to get sound if the sound
scheme is listed in the Control Panel.

TIA

Mark

Somewhere in the archives is a somewhat complex method that
requires editing of the Windows registry. I'll let you Google
for it.

But if you installed Quicken using a different Windows user than
the Windows user who is running Quicken, that might be the
source of your problem. I think in most cases, you can avoid
that, by modifying your non-admin user to have admin rights,
installing Quicken as that user, then removing the admin rights
from that user (in your case, I think you should do an uninstall
first ... as the user who installed Quicken, deleting all
Windows folders with Quicken in the name after the uninstall;
and when you reinstall, do so to a new folder.)

Hi, Mark.

This is another of the things that Intuit could easily fix, but they
haven't. It has been a problem since Windows 2000 introduced new security
measures, including different settings for different users. Since I'm only
one guy with one computer and no network of any kind, I've never had to
learn very much about users and permissions (until Vista). But I did learn
just enough to fix this Quicken sounds problem back in Win2K - and the same
fix still works, with only minor revision to fit your computer instead of
mine. This problem has been discussed here several times and this fix has
worked with Win2K, WinXP and the beta builds of Windows Vista.

The fix requires a simple Registry edit to add the sounds to the .DEFAULT
user in the HKEY_USERS tree. If you are familiar with editing the Registry,
this is a quick and easy fix. If you are not comfortable with editing the
Registry, please get some help before tackling it. There's no Undo button,
and a small typo or other mistake could have dire consequences.

Attached is my file "QSounds.txt". It's the plain-text version of a
.reg (Registry) file. You can load it into Notepad, then use Edit's Find
and Replace to Find all instances of my folder E:\QuickenW and change them
to your own folder (C:\Program Files\QuickenW). Note that the
folder path uses TWO backslashes, rather than one. When you've finished the
edit, you can save the file, then change its extension to .reg. Then just
click on the filename in Windows Explorer. It may seem that nothing
happened, but the next time you start Quicken, you should hear the
"qopen.wav" sound.

Before this fix, if you go to Sounds in WinXP's Control Panel and look for
Quicken sounds, you won't find any listing for Quicken at all. After the
Registry edit, you should find a heading for Quicken with several sound
events under it. You can keep the defaults or edit the sounds to suit
yourself.

It worked perfectly
I just had to point it to the opening tones
Everything else fell into place once I adjusted the registry
thanks again
