I beg to differ. A full path name on XP can be one of two different
things if the data file is in "My Documents". In additiuon, the full
path name can be up to 255 characters (or perhaps even longer?). The
full path name is available in File menu where it shows the Most
Recently Used (MRU) file list.

I agree with Stubby. It's not all that difficult to end up operating on a
backup copy of your file when you think you're using the original.
Displaying the full path name helps eliminate this possibility.

To display an extra-long file name in an N-character field they could show
the first N/2 - 2 characters followed by elipses and the last N/2 - 2
characters.
