Someone posted how with the memo, category, and tag fields all being on the
second line of the 2 line transaction, real estate was getting a little
tight. But with the new tabs at the top of the screen (to jump from HOME to
CASH FLOW to INVESTING etc.), it does make navigation easier from account to
account enough so that for the first time, I haven't felt the need to keep
the account list opened on the screen all the time. Ergo, using the full
width for the register now is really cool (I know you could do this before,
but the new nav tabs make it more palatable).

Having a drop list of 'tags' and categories is nice to have when assigning
same. With the method of categorizing the categories, it makes it easier to
assign one via point and click as well. This might have been available
previous to Q2008 and I just noticed it for the first time when playing with
the register.

Just mentioning some of these things since I don't want to come across as a
nay-sayer for Q2008 - they've done some nice things to it as well.

Andrew,

Thanks for reminding me about this. When I first noticed the tabs at the
top of the page, I thought about closing off the Accounts column. But, I
just forgot to do it. So, after your post, I closed the column. It seems
to work fine. What's especially nice is that I can drop down that Accounts
column temporarily by clicking on the remaining Accounts box at the top left
corner when I need it. I'll probably keep it this way. Thanks for the
reminder.

Dave

After closing the right sidebar of accounts for a while, I ended up
re-opening it. The biggest irritations were with Updates. First, with that
sidebar closed, there's no obvious place where I can see which accounts have
downloaded transaction against them. I have to open the sidebar to see the
little red checkmarks. Second, I like watching my total investment value
jump (usually down :) ) when the download ends: that way I know how much
wailing and moaning I should do. Again, unless I remember to be on an
investment page, that doesn't happen with the bar closed. So, back to the
old way. It was worth trying, though.

You can have the Account sidebar open and be on the investment tab
(portfolio view) at the same time while downloading. Personally, my account
list is too long to see much of what is downloaded so I don't pay attention
to the sidebar until after the download completes. With the new navigation,
the only reason I use the Account sidebar is to display downloaded
transactions.

I like having my account list open on the left, with all the balances
showing, in spite of the new tab layout in 08. Gives me one-stop shopping
to get into each account with a single click. All things considered, I
don't think the differences between 07 and 08 are really worth the upgrade
cost. Going from 06 or earlier would be an easier choice for me. Now, if
they had included a snapshot graph of cash flow for the Home page, I'd be
completely sold. I'd love to have a Cash Flow snapshot right next to the
Income/Expense snapshot. Both tell a different, but equally useful, story.
This is a glaring omission in 08, in my opinion.
