For rss, I have tried
http://www.rockryno.com/quicken/1.htm
alt.comp.software.financial.quicken
http://alt.comp.software.financial.quicken.htm

And some other variations on these themes. Each time I receive a message
about "...is not a valid rss feed."

And that is a correct response. This is a newsgroup. Newsgroups do not do
RSS feeds.

Your choices are to stick with the browser method or configure a newsreader
software (outlook express/windows mail, Thunderbird, Forte Agent, to name a
few) to access the newsgroup on the athenanews.com server.

Actually you can get an RSS feed into Windows Mail (and probably other
software) out of Google Groups. I did it and I didn't like it. The
main issues I had is that I needed to log into Google Groups if I wanted
to post a reply and I prefer to not have my Google Account listed, nor
did I want a throw away account plus not enough of the message was
displayed. I did take me to Google Groups automatically if I wanted to
see more of the message or post a response.

There is an add-in for Outlook 2007 where I get Newsgroup feeds into
Outlook - much like Windows Mail. The license is $24. I am using it on
a trial basis for 30 days. I like it so far as it means that I don't
have to jump to a separate application. More information can be found
here: www.mapilab.com/outlook

My personal belief is if you are going to get involved with newsgroups then
the only way to read and reply to them is by using a newsreader software. It
does require having access to a newsgroup server but there are free and low
cost newservers available. Webnews like google groups just does not cut it
for me. ymmv

And your chance of your question being seen is much reduced if you post
from Google Groups as more and more people are getting fed up with
Google's support of spam and are joining the Usenet Improvement
Project. See link in signature.
