TT 08 on my computer along with TT 07? Andrew 11-29-2007

I installed TT Deluxe this past week for t/y 2007 on my XP system. Under
the TURBOTAX install folder are now TWO versions of TT - one for 06, the
other for 07. Each folder fully populated with the exes, dlls, etc.

I don't recall seeing multiple years sitting on the computer at the same
time - not that it bothers me in any sense, and maybe I even manually
uninstalled the prior years version in the past and just am having a senior
moment now. But has anyone else noticed this 'new' behavior, or indeed, is
it just me forgetting the past?

(And the are two entries for both 06 and 07 in the UNINSTALL PROGRAM
panels).

Perhaps the title of this post might have been better "TT 07 on my computer
along with TT 06"!

Hi, Andrew.

It's entirely possible to have two or more years' TurboTax programs
installed side by side. In fact, I've done it many times. I would probably
have several on here right now except that I've had to reinstall Windows and
Vista so many times - especially while beta-testing Vista - that I've not
bothered to re-install prior years TT after re-installing Windows.

As has been discussed here before, an accounting program like Quicken can
serve multiple years. Many users here are still using Quicken from at least
5 years ago, and some report still running MS-DOS versions. The only reason
to update Quicken is to get new features, or to continue downloading
transactions from banks or other sources after Intuit "sunsets" online
access support for the older versions. Trying to share a single QDATA
fileset between two years' versions of Quicken is usually a recipe for
disaster.

But an income tax program must be re-written each year because tax rules,
exemptions, deductions, etc. - and the forms themselves - change each year
and last year's program will not get the right results for this year. Each
year's program must create and use its own separate data files, as well as
the application files. But it is entirely possible, and often desirable, to
load a prior year's data into that year's TurboTax program to reprint a form
or to research the facts reported there - or to help prepare an amended
return for that year. Of course, each year's program files and data files
must be clearly labeled and segregated.

On my computer, I have a folder named E:TurboTax, with two subfolders for
each year: TurboTaxTax05 and TurboTaxTax05Dat, for example. When I
clicked its ttax.exe just now, it warned me that it needed to be updated -
which it did for me when I said OK. Then I had to Browse to find my '05
return and TT05 loaded it. ;<)

OK RC - thanks - I guess I must have manually deleted the previous
incarnation each year then. I could have sworn that I did not do this in
year's past. Oh well! (And of course, I understand what you say. In fact,
I just this week had to file a 1040X amended return (using last year's
program before I installed this years) and it specfically urged you to do
the 1040X using the t/y program that created the original return; also
offered a link to purchase it if you didn't still have it!

Thanks!
