TurboTax Question BRH 12-17-2007

Just came from CompUSA. They have TT Basic ($19.99), TT Deluxe ($44.99
I think) and some more expensive versions.

I seem to recall that each year, TT comes out with a version that
includes one state return, but I didn't see that this year.

Does anyone know which version to get this year which includes a state
return download, or at least a discounted TurboTax State purchase?

I don't need all of the whiz-bang stuff like deduction maximizer,
automated audit, etc. that comes with the Deluxe versions.

Thanks.

Given that CompUSA is shutting down, they may not be fully stocked. That said, I
was able to pick up a CD with just TTax Deluxe Federal and right next to it was
a Deluxe Federal & State. Federal Only was $39.99, so the one you saw was
probably the Federal & State.

The TT 07 Deluxe I got at Best Buy clearly has "Federal + State" on the
outside cover below the Red Check and TURBOTAX logo.

Hi, Andrew.

My Best Buy had BOTH versions of TT Deluxe - both Federal + State and
Federal only - with the prices you saw. I'm not sure BB realized what they
have because the boxes of the two versions were kind of jumbled together on
the display shelf. The customer has to make sure he gets the version he
needs - at the right price. It would be very easy to take home the wrong
version. :^{

As I think I reported earlier, I got the Basic version for $19.99, since my
tax situation is no longer very complicated - and Texas has no state income
tax. ;<)

Yep - that's what I was trying to point out that on the front of the box it
states "+ State" for the kind that allows the state download wo/charge.
You're right about possibly mixing up the boxes, so I hope the OP is careful
if he needs a state module. You're lucky (in that sense) you don't have
state tax. Some members of my immediate family not only have state tax, but
the joy of NY City tax as well as Federal and State.

I'm sure you're following the tribulations about congress jerking around the
AMT issue - the folks at TT, Tax Cut, etc. (never mind the poor programmers
at the IRS!) are going to have a lot of fun when they get the word and have
to do some good programming late in the cycle. Hopefully, it'll be table
updates and they don't change the logic behind it - going to be a fun tax
season this year for them for sure.
