I think there are two separate issues.
You don't have to - and in my opinion, you should not - accept
placeholders. Just because the downloaded holdings do not match
what you have in Quicken, is not cause to accept any
placeholders. I have a couple of fi's who do not download
holdings correctly; I ignore offers to accept placeholders to
"correct" the non-problem (my Quicken holdings are correct, the
downloaded holdings are not).
In recent months, I have read about this "unidentified security"
several times; before that, I don't think I ever heard of such a
thing. I haven't figured out just what is going on yet, so I'm
not sure if there is a solution, or workaround, or what.
But the first thing I would do is: select the known security in
your Security List, click Edit, and uncheck the box, "matched
wirh online security". Hopefully, next time you download from
that fi, Quicken will offer you the opportunity to match the
downloaded security to your Quicken security. If that doesn't
happen, or it doesn't eliminate the apparent discrepancy in
holdings, I suspect your fi is downloading the holdings
incorrectly.
