Hi RC!

It appears that my current system is (mostly) compatible with Vista.
However, I fear that greediness will force me to upgrade many programs here
at home, including, in addition to Q2008 (I will skip 2007), Office. Then
the version compatibility issues will become a problem. What to do with
the many older computers at work that will not be upgraded to Office
whatever the latest is (just about everything runs Office 2003 at work).

Any thoughts

Hi, Han.

As I've often stated, I'm a one-man, one-computer kind of guy with no net
but the Internet. There's nobody but me here in my converted bedroom
retiree's office in the home. So I've not had to learn a lot of things
about computers. And sharing Office files with co-workers is one of the
things that I've been able to overlook.

I am running Office 2007 Ultimate (courtesy of MSDN). I don't use it much,
just a couple of Excel spreadsheets, occasional Word documents, and such.
My understanding is that Office 2007 is mostly backwards-compatible,
although you might need to specify that a document is to be saved in the
older format. My limited use of the Office programs has not given me any
headaches in bringing forward all my old documents, but I haven't had to
share them with users of older versions of Office, so my experience is
certainly not a real test.

In my year-and-a-half of testing successive beta builds, I saw continual
progress in Vista's ability to use hardware and software from Microsoft and
other vendors. Many programs (Nero and Adobe Photoshop Elements, for just a
couple of examples) would not even install on my computer a year ago; the
current versions work fine with both x86 (32-bit) and x64 versions of Vista
RTM. Most of the problems still being reported in newsgroups are by users
who are still running beta versions (Release Candidates RC1 and RC2, mostly)
because they don't yet have access to the final code - which goes on sale
tomorrow.

(We missed you here for a long time, Han. It's good to see you back.)

Hi RC:

I've been here all the time, lurking and learning. Thanks for
remembering me.
