I've reduced my use of Quicken '08 to just following market trends.
Update stock prices once a week or so.

But I can't even add a new security without Quicken having to "phone
home" to call in and look it up. On dial up that can take a while
(and of course, while it's hooked to the modem, nothing else can be
done in Quicken). Is the problem that Quicken users are suppose to be
more affluent, and able to afford a broadband connection?

Fnord, I'm not happy with this program.

Yes you can. Add the security without supplying the ticker
symbol. At any later time, Edit the security to add the ticker.

In all the years you've been posting here, I've never seen you happy
with Quicken. Perhaps it is time to cast your net wider?

If you would care to put money on it, I would take your bet.
Seeing as how I don't have rabbit ears - save for a set I may have
left over from a costume party - and I don't watch TV.

But I take it from your post, that you feel no need to keep
expenses low. As a friend said about unexpected expenses; "the nice
thing is you don't go over budget fixing them, cause there rarely is a
budget for them."
No budget, no shortfalls. Works for Congress...
