Working with categories -automatically assign Homer.Simpson 08-16-2009

Hi,

I'm trying to automatically assign categories to my transactions.

Example: Electric company >>> Assign to home|utilities|electric.

I see where Quicken can assign them automatically per:
http://tinyurl.com/onbf4m

However, this link seems to apply only for:
1) transactions entered manually
(assumedly transactions "hand" entered in the ledger)
2) transactions updated from financial institution
(transactions downloaded from my bank)

Neither seems to apply/work when I use "make an online payment" and pull
up the Online_Center|Payments tab. In this tab, I can assign the
payee's, categories, memo, etc - but the category field is NOT
automatically assigned. One must refile through the categories for each
transaction entered - rather awkward.

Any guidance on how to better utilize the automatic category assignment
capability of Quicken?

TIA, Homer

In Quicken preferences, in the Register Quickfill panel, I have
everything checked except the first box (use enter key ...). Now oncxe
I have made and entry manually (or edited a downloaded Tx), it will
remember what I did and automatically use those data the next time. To
annoyance, as it remembers the last edited medication from my pharmacy
entry, and I have to edit it almost every time ...

Two conditions must be met to have Quicken automatically assign a category
to a billpay transaction: as Han says, you need QuickFill turned on
(that's "Complete fields ...." and "Recall memorized payees ....") in your
Quicken Program QuickFill preferences; and you need a Memorized
transaction for the specific payee, a Memorized transaction with a "Type"
of "Online Pmt" (or "Onln").

Thanks to you both.

I think the problem is I have two such entries for these transactions.
One is PMT and the other is Online Pmt.

Deleting/editing until I have only an Online Pmt field seems to be the
trick. I see I also edit the memo field too! Cool!

Thanks for all you help!

Interesting. I had tested with a payee that also had both a memorized
Payment and a memorized Online Pmt. Quicken only showed one of those in
the drop down Payee field in the Online Center ... and it was the "Online
Pmt" transaction. As soon as I selected the payee, the category field was
filled in.
