exit code 1603 fix led to exit code 1304 which still failed to install
2008 Premier and 2007 won't re-install, same errors. Any ideas on
what else to try would be appreciated.

Hi, Sailor.

We would have a better chance to help you if you let us in on some of your
secrets. Like, which version of Windows: 98, XP, Vista or...Mac?
Installation is quite different for each platform. We can't see your
computer, so we don't know anything about it that you don't tell us.

In Vista, for example, you probably need to be running as Administrator.
But we can be more specific if you tell us more about your computer system.
Are you using the defaults, or doing a Custom install to a non-default
folder, perhaps? We may or may not need to know about your hard drives,
partitions and such. Is this an upgrade from an earlier Quicken?

thanks for the reply RC

Here's what I know:

version of Windows:         2000XP home

Custom install to a non-default folder, perhaps? Yes, per Quicken
instructions from their support pages. created a folder, copy/pasted
disk 1 and custom folders from the CD which leads to the EC1304 error.

hard drives, partitions and such. OEM, nothing special that I can
tell you about.

Is this an upgrade from an earlier Quicken? Up from 2007 premier
which now won't re-install, same error codes..

Hi, Sailor.

Those details help some, but raise more questions. :^{

> version of Windows: 2000XP home

No such thing! There is Windows 2000, introduced in February 2000 and often
abbreviated Win2K. And then there is the successor, Windows XP, which
debuted 21 months later, in October 2001. It was succeeded just last year
(January 2007) by Windows Vista. Both WinXP and Vista come in multiple
versions including Home Basic and Home Premium. Which do you have? Just
run "WinVer" and it will tell you.

Win2K introduced some new "features" - some welcomed, some not. Among other
things, it made it trickier to install applications. I haven't used Win2K
since the day WinXP "went gold", and I've forgotten a lot of those tricks.
Each version of Windows and each version of Quicken have added security
measures; that's why it's important to know the versions of both Quicken and
Windows. You might need to specifically Run as Administrator to install
Quicken. I may have seen the error codes you are getting, but I don't
recall how to fix them, so I'll let some of the others here help you with
that.

You could tell us the make and model of your computer. Chances are someone
would recognize it and maybe have some specific advice.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Setup should not normally involve
copying and pasting anything directly from the CD. Setup reads the CD,
converts files from their CD form to what needs to be on the hard disk, then
writes the converted code there.

Is your Quicken executable file C:Program FilesQuickenqw.exe? If not,
then what is the full pathname to qw.exe?

The Quicken Help file in my Q2008 Deluxe (on Vista Ultimate x64) seems to be
broken; the Contents work but Search doesn't let me type in a search term.
So I Googled for "quicken +1304" and got plenty of hits. One took me to the
Quicken support page where I found this:

" When attempting to install Quicken the following message is returned:
"[Error 1304] Error writing to file [filename]. Verify that you have access
to that directory.
"This error may be caused by an issue with the CD-ROM or the CD."

That, along with steps to fix the problem, is at:
https://quicken.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/quicken.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=6965&p_sid=T-kha15j&p_lva=4978#

If this doesn't solve the issue for you, please post back. Tell us exactly
what you did (just "Tried it" doesn't help much) and what results you saw
("Didn't work" doesn't help much, either).
