I've just upgraded to Quicken 2008 Deluxe. When I look at my account
window, I would like to expand (widen) specific columns (ie Payee,
category, etc). Most user interfaces will allow you to go up to the
title bar and drag the column to a new width using the mouse. I can't
seem to do this with Quicken 2008. Is there any way to perform that
function?

What did you upgrade from?

To the best of my knowledge, no version of Quicken allowed this
for any account type ... until Q2007 (or possibly Q2006).

In Q2007/Q2008, you can adjust the widths of the fields only in
investment accounts ("Transactions" tab). The column widths in
non-investment account registers are fixed ... except that you
can tell Q2008 not to display the "Tag" field separately, which
will alter the widths of other columns (as will switching from
"two line" to "one line" display).

[I think usually in Quicken, if a column width can be adjusted,
the column divider in the heading consists of two vertical lines
instead of one, or none. The Investing Center, Portfolio tab,
is one exception.]

And "hiding" the account bar by clicking on the "-" sign next to the
"Accounts" will open more screen real estate, making the account
register fields larger. Also, maximizing the window by pressing F11
will also increase the screen size, making the register fields larger.

Thanks for your comments. I think I upgraded from a 2005 version and if
I remember correctly the titles could be widened ... I could be wrong.
I tried your suggestions and they work pretty well. I'd still like to
be able to use the mouse, but these are good workarounds.

Thanks for the help.

I'm still using Q2005 as my regular Quicken version (for a few
more weeks anyway). No register column widths can be altered in
Q2005. [I looked at Q2002 as well; same limitation.]

You may be thinking of reports: some report column widths can be
changed (more in Q2008 than in Q2005), just look for the pair of
vertical lines in the headings.
