If you err, err on the side of using a newer version than you need. Older
versions of Quicken could corrupt files if you tried to open a file from a
newer version of Quicken. So I would start my conversion attempts with
newer old versions and work my way backward as needed.

Q2009 does not play well with other versions of Quicken. I can't tell you
about Q2009 and other, really old, versions of Quicken, but I would just
plan that Q2009 will probably have some problems after you install older
versions. So when you have a data file ready to convert to Q2009, just
plan to uninstall Q2009 and re-install it. [I don't use the default
Quicken install folder (Program Files > Quicken), I create a version
specific folder (Program Files > Q2009).]
I also recommend going to Intuit's support site and downloading the manual
updates (patches, or "releases") for any versions of Quicken you may want
to use in the future ... and keeping them permanently on your hard drive.
Intuit has instituted a new policy of keeping only the most current manual
update available ... so if you updated to the latest release and did not
like it, you would not be able to return to any earlier release for that
version.
Here is the site for Quicken manual updates:
