I did what you are contemplating many years ago.
As I recall, I ended up with many "orphaned" transfers.
My "workaround" was to create @deposit and @withdraw categories, and
customized reports to ignore those transactions, since they would ordinarily
be a "wash."
I HIGHLY recommend against that course of action, it is FRAUGHT with
gotchas.

speaking about hiding accounts,............i have done with with
obsolete banks and such, but they still show up in the window when I
want to transfer money from one account to another. In other words, I
have many, many accounts that get in the way of finding my current
checking account. Since the list is alphabetical, my Washington
Mutual account appears at the last of the list and I have to go
through many, many accounts to get to it.
I still am unsure what happens to related accounts when you delete an
account. what happens to the totals of the kept accounts?
