Is/Can anything be done about the proliferation of spam to this
group?

Not much. The person has been switching ISPs/news service to keep ahead of
being reported for spamming.

I ended up trying Pan because I can block messages based on message ID. You
might try using it too.

Of course Google Groups is the source of much of the spam in all
newsgroups, they seem to encourage it.

I block all GG post and that eliminates 90% of all spam. See signature
for how to do it.

Since you block GG you probably did not see the original post since it came
from GG. The majority of the spam messages this past week did not come from
GG. They came from the same person posting from usenetmonster.com &
usenetnow.com plus a couple of odd posts came in from teranews.com.

I see you are posting using Xnews. Does it handle html and can you post
binaries/attachments with it? I tested Pan because it can filter by
MessageID but it is lacking in a few areas so I am looking further.

Yes, I did, I allow replies to GGer to be scored -5000 so I can, if
I want, see the original if anyone responds to it.

I noticed that, it's unusual.

It won't display HTML but it will read HTML posts (which should not
be necessary as HTML posting is strictly forbidden in Usenet except
for the few HTML groups.) There are some newbies here who post in
HTML, they are either ignorant of netiquette or so unbelievably rude
as to not care but I usually just kill file them.

There are two versions of Pan, the old Pan which was a pretty good
newsreader and the new Pan which is, as you say, lacking in a few
areas. I suspect the older version might be found somewhere?
Meanwhile, I understand that the developers of Pan are still working on
it to bring back the features that were dropped when it was re-written
but you'd need to talk to someone who knows more about Pan than I do
for more information....

I've been very pleased with Xnews for many years, now, I don't know if
you'd like it or not but it's free so give it a try:

http://xnews.newsguy.con, get the "latest version" then get the "latest
test version" and use it to overwrite the xnews.exe file. Why? See:

http://blinkynet.net/comp/xnewsrels.html

Everything you'd ever want to know about Xnews is available from
news.software.readers and a lot of it is here:

http://blinkynet.net/comp/ndx_windows.html

Personally, I found it very intuitive as a basic newsreader to begin
and got fast answers from news.software.readers when I needed answers
to more complex configuratons. There are some VERY sharp people there
even though our favorite shark has passed on. <sigh>
