Hi,

I have a W-2 from the state of Massachusetts and on the W-2
no Social Security Benefits are listed but there is Box 14
Code (C) which is listed as Pre-Tax Retirement
Contributions. Someone told me this is Social Security.

I'm doing this return for my elderly father in-law.

Any idea if this should be listed as Social Security?

Thanks,

BobB

Someone lied. It's exactly what it says it is.

I'm not sure where you're thinking of putting it on the
return, but it doesn't go anywhere on the Federal return.
Check the state instructions to see if there's an adjustment
there. For example, in Kansas state employees' retirement
contributions are not taxed at the Federal level but are
added to Federal AGI for state tax computation.

It's not. It's a contributory state pension. Your father
likely started working for MA before state workers were
brought into the SS system (if they ever were) and was
grandfathered in.

No, it shouldn't.

In addition to other replies about it not being Social
Security, you might want to make sure the state wages are
correctly entered on the state return. They may not be the
same as federal wages in box one.

Thanks Rich and everyone else that replied. I appreciate
the information and I most certainly didn't put it as Social
Security. Sorry for the late response.

Thanks,
BobB
