FYI:

The FTB intends to mail 140,000 audit letters to individuals who
used the HOH filing status last year. CA receives slightly more
than two million returns with HOH as the filing status.

They do this every year -- and have for many years. You can avoid
receiving the letter if you complete the questionnaire and attach it
to the return when it is filed.

However the questionnaire (Form 4803e) is only available for electronic
filers. If the form itself has inconsistent information or indicates
HOH requirements are not met, then there is still an audit.

I have printed out the form information and used it as an attachment to
an amended return on a recent occasion, still waiting to see if that
helped...
