Are we allowed to make gifts to charities directly from an IRA in 2009
like we could last year and avoid showing the amount of the gifts as income
or deductions? I seemed to recall that law was for just a few years but
maybe it was extended.

Yes for 2009. Add the distribution amount to Form 1040 line 15a
but not to 15b, and write QCD on line 15.
