I know this might sound silly but I still have not filed my
taxes for last year. I filed an extension but didn't quite
file up my taxes even after the extension. I do NOT owe any
money to the government and just have to take some amount as
refund as I am still a student at USC. How do I go about
filing my taxes for this year and the past year? Should they
be similar forms with just different values? or do I need to
fill in a separate form as I am late? Can anybody help me
with this.... Would filing my taxes be too complicated a
procedure this year? and do i need to seek professional
advice? or can i do it personally?

Appreciate all the help in advance.

Thanks,
Mihir....

You can get 2005 forms and instructions at www.irs.gov. You
need to file separate returns for 2005 and 2006, on the
appropriate forms.

You might check for a local VITA site since it sounds like
your income is low enough to qualify for this free service.
Around Mid-March, when things are slow, they could probably
do both years for you. If you can't find any information
about VITA sites call 1-800-829-1040 and ask to be directed
to your area's VITA/TCE coordinator.

Collect all your income and deduction data for 2005 and
2006. Sit down and sort into two piles, one for each year.
Go to www.irs.gov and download the 2005 forms you will need.
You can get the 2006 forms at your local library.

Fill out the 2005 forms, put in envelope, add stamp and mail
to the address on the back of the 1040 instruction booklet.

Do the same for the 2006 forms.
Wait for your refund checks.

Now don't you feel better?

You need to file your '05 return. You can go to irs.gov and
get the forms you'll need, if you are a student it shouldn't
be complicated. You should be able to do it yourself, I take
it you had some income and taxes withheld, but as a student,
maybe can be claimed as a deduction by your parents? If you
are still lost, post the items (not the dollars just list,
e.g. earned income, paid some federal/state tax, etc) and
someone will tell you exactly what forms to seek. The forms
are different each year, and are dated. You might consider
eBay for "turbotax 2005". Going for less than $10. And worth
saving the time on the forms.

Always willing to help out a fellow Trojan. (Marshall School
'75, MBA) If you want in person help, you can come to the
Wiseburn Library in Hawthorne on Wednesday, March 14 at
6:00. I run a free public tax workshop for people in your
situation. Don't feel bad about late filing. I still have 3
clients who haven't filed for 2004 and 5 more for 2006. Some
of them only file when they get a wage levy from the
Franchise Tax Board - and they get refunds!
